So the next couple weeks I’m a little busy…I know I won’t have much time for new drawings, so I’m going to try to keep the updates with sketches out of old books. I was looking through old sketchbooks and came across this one particular book. Every once in a while, I need to just let my brain defrag, usually by doodling abstract shapes. This drawing is from the sketchbook I save for those abstract thoughts.

While looking through the book, I see when I did date the images that a lot of them are 6+ months apart. The next week of blog postings will be a departure from the usual cartoons and more like something that would end up as a painting…

Old Sketchbook – Robot

I’m going to be hard pressed to get new drawings done this week, but I’ll do my best to find interesting sketches from old sketchbooks to fill the gaps.

Today’s robot is from 2007, and is only about 2″ high in the original sketch.

Daily Drawing 167 – Poot & Toodles

“Poot & Toodles” – so sometimes the names for these characters don’t come so easy. My fiance is the ‘name master’ for about 98% of the characters, and I think she does quite well – usually pulling the names out of thin air in 30 seconds or less. I think these two threw her for a bit of a loop.

Daily Drawing 166 – King Xiuhcoatl

King Xiuhcoatl…try saying that three times fast. I was fighting the urge to draw a dragon, I lost. Although I was going to draw something a little more “realistic”. (Xiuhcoatl comes from Aztec Mythology – I believe it means Fire Serpent and God of Drought) In my version, he’s just a king of drought.

…I still have the urge to draw a more realistic dragon…

It doesn’t take long before I come back to drawing some sort of monster. I don’t know whether to say it’s in my nature, or I have some sort of monster OCD. (Obsessive Compulsive Drawing)

Karen wanted a seal pup today, so who am I to argue. I realize I kind of stranded Manuel in the boat with no oars. I guess that’s where the friendship begins.

Today’s sketch is by request…and has a little story behind it.

Karen and I often walk through Burnaby’s Central Park. The squirrels have become so accustom to humans feeding them, that they have no fear, in fact, they will come running at you thinking that you are about to feed them. On more than one occasion the charging squirrel has elicited a small shriek from Karen. Her greatest fear is that flying squirrels will move into the park and attack from above!

Daily Drawing 162 – Lion Cubs

It’s hot enough these days that I thought an African safari would be a good idea for today’s daily drawing. Actually, Karen gave me the idea to draw the lion cubs. I was a little hesitant to draw them, but I’m glad I did.

I was asked over the weekend how long I give myself for each daily drawing. Usually I don’t get a chance to sit down and draw in my sketchbooks until late in the evening while I’m watching tv. So it often comes down to be anywhere from half an hour, to an hour and a half. Today’s drawing was started in the last half of “Hoarders: buried alive” and carried through most of “The Glades”. I know I should focus more and turn off the distractions, but I leave that for the serious stuff…these are just fun!
